I'd like to confirm Utah single-issue scoring. With RQ 3-6-9, total score of test for NDI/DI must be +6/-6 regardless of spot totals.

That is my understanding and that is how I evaluate a Utah. The quarterly journal "Polygraph", volume 35, number 3, 2006, has a good article about the Utah test and how to evaluate the results. The article is entitled "Utah Probable Lie Comparison Test," by Mark D. Handler

Yes, that's correct. You can read Mark's article, or you can read the Bell et al article in the 1999 special edition of POLYGRAPH (on scoring). I've got an electronic copy of the Bell et al article here someplace if you want a complete look at the Utah scoring system. Just email me.

Thanks for the reference to the Handler article. It's very informative and appears to have the "nuts & bolts" for the Utah PLT. Sandler lists 5-8 & 11 as position of RQ's for single issue Utah exam (page 141).

Barry - I'll send you an email as I would like to learn more about the scoring system.

There are several "versions" of the Utah CQT, and what Mark published is one of the most widely used. In their chapter in Kleiner, Honts and Raskin call it a "typical" CQT. As long as it has three runs of N C R, then it's safe to call it a Utah test. (The differences are usually in the first couple questions: some use an OI/SYM, some don't.)

I should add - as Mark corrected this back a ways - that the only change from the Bell et al scoring procedures is in the pneumos. Bell et al reads two breaths (suppression, etc) are needed to consider the tracing a reaction, but further research has shown three are necessary. With the algorithm looking at 10 seconds of line-length, I'm not sure how that adds up as three breaths can take more than 10 seconds with some people. (I'm not saying either is wrong. It just seems to mean hand-scorers look at more data, but it is a noisy channel.)
